Preventative maintenance is the difference between an equipment asset that lasts for thousands of trouble-free hours and one that suffers costly jobsite breakdowns. Performing a disciplined 5-minute walkaround inspection every morning before starting your machine prevents minor issues from escalating into major hydraulic or engine failures.

Here is the official daily maintenance checklist for operators of the TYPHON MZVT.

Pre-Start Morning Inspection (Engine Off)

+-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------+
| Inspection Item | Specification / Target| Action Required |
+-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------+
| Honda GX690 Engine Oil| Dipstick Full Mark | Top off 10W-30 API SJ+|
| Hydraulic Reservoir | Sight glass indicator | Top off ISO 46/68 |
| Air Filter Element | Dual-element foam/paper| Shake clear; no tears|
| Tire Pressures | 18 × 9.50-8 pneumatic | Inspect 20–24 PSI |
| Pivot Grease Pins | EP2 Lithium Grease | Grease all 8 fittings |
| Quick-Attach Latches | Fully engaged & locked| Clean debris; lock pin|
| Hydraulic Hoses | No weeping or chafing | Tighten fittings |

Step-by-Step Maintenance Procedures

1. Honda GX690 Commercial Engine Oil Check

  • Park the machine on level ground with the boom fully lowered.
  • Remove the dipstick, wipe clean with a lint-free cloth, re-insert without screwing in, and verify the oil level sits between the crosshatch marks.
  • Engine Oil Type: Use high-quality SAE 10W-30 commercial engine oil meeting API service classification SJ or later. Change oil every 100 operating hours.

2. Hydraulic Fluid Reservoir

  • Check the hydraulic sight gauge on the side reservoir tank. The oil should be clear amber, not milky (which indicates moisture contamination) or blackened (which indicates severe overheating).
  • Capacity: 10 L (2.6 gal). Never overfill; thermal expansion during operation requires headroom.

3. Grease Points and Pivot Pins

Grease is cheaper than steel bushings. Apply 2 to 3 pumps of EP2 Lithium Grease to all pivot zerks:

  • Boom lift cylinder base and rod ends (4 fittings)
  • Bucket tilt cylinder base and rod ends (2 fittings)
  • Main boom hinge tower pins (2 fittings)
  • Rear steering pivot bearing (1 fitting)
  • Tip: Grease pins until a small collar of fresh grease purges from the pin seal. This pushes abrasive sand and grit out of the joint.

4. Tire Pressures and Tread Inspection

  • Verify all three pneumatic tires (18 × 9.50-8) are inflated evenly to 20–24 PSI.
  • Check for embedded nails, wire, or rim bead separations. Uneven tire pressure causes the machine to lean slightly under heavy boom loads.

Post-Operation End-of-Day Shutdown

  1. Lower Boom and Relieve Hydraulic Pressure: Always park with the attachment rested flat on the ground. Never leave the bucket suspended in the air.
  2. Wash Underbody and Radiator Fins: Rinse mud from the wheel wells, boom linkages, and engine cooling shroud. Built-up mud insulates the air-cooled engine cylinders, causing elevated operating temperatures.
  3. Log Hours: Record ending hour-meter reading in your equipment maintenance log.
