Can the MZVT Work in a Narrow Backyard? A Complete Access Guide
How to verify residential backyard access: gate clearance measurements, corner turning envelopes, overhead tree hazards, and ground protection checklists.

Before taking on a backyard pool remodel, patio installation, or drainage project, confirming machine access is critical. Arriving at a customer's home only to discover that your equipment cannot clear the side gate or turn between the house and the property line causes costly delays.
Here is a practical guide to determining whether the TYPHON MZVT can access your specific backyard work zone.
The Critical Dimensions of the TYPHON MZVT
- Total Width: 39.10 inches (993 mm) across the widest tire points
- Total Length (with bucket down): ~86 inches (2,184 mm)
- Wheelbase: 55.12 inches (1,400 mm)
- Hinge Pin Max Height: 73.82 inches (1,875 mm)
- Turning Radius: Zero-radius 360° rear wheel pivot
Step-by-Step Access Verification Checklist
1. Gate Width Clearance
- Measure the narrowest point between gate posts. Do not measure the open fence panel; measure between the inside latch hardware and the hinge post.
- Minimum Gate Width Needed: 41 inches (allowing 1 inch of buffer on each side of the 39.1" machine).
- Tip: If the gate is 36 inches wide, inspect whether removing one side gate post or unlatching a fence panel takes less than 15 minutes.
2. Side-Yard Corridor & Foundation Obstacles
- Check for wall-mounted obstacles along the house:
- Air conditioner condensing units
- Gas meters and electric utility meters
- Downspouts and hose bibbs
- Eaves and low-hanging roof fascia
- You need a clear ground corridor at least 42 inches wide from grade to a height of 6 feet.
3. Corner Turning Envelopes (The L-Turn)
The hardest access challenge is an "L-turn"—where a machine must exit a narrow side corridor and immediately make a 90-degree turn through a fence into the backyard.
- Articulated loaders fail this test because their chassis cannot articulate without sweeping a wide arc.
- The MZVT handles L-turns effortlessly: drive the front tires just past the fence corner, turn the rear steer wheel 90 degrees, and pivot the machine around the front axle into the yard.
4. Slope and Incline Safety
- Check the side yard grade. Never operate across cross-slopes exceeding 15 degrees.
- When traversing uphill or downhill, always keep the heavy end (the rear engine compartment) pointed uphill. When carrying a full bucket of topsoil uphill, drive forward; when carrying it downhill, back down slowly.
Printable Pre-Job Site Access Checklist
- Clear gate width measured: ________ inches (Minimum 41" recommended)
- 811 utility locate call completed and clear
- Overhead clearance checked (wires, eaves, tree branches > 7 ft)
- Sprinkler heads and valve boxes flagged with stakes
- Septic tank lid and drain field marked (do not drive over septic lids)
- Pavers or soft lawn protected with plywood or ground mats if soil is wet
